Hiking Lake Calvera Trail To A Dormant Volcano

Did you know there is an extinct volcano in Carlsbad? And that there is a trail system that goes up and over it that offers the highest view in the city?

Well it’s all true. The volcano is called Cerro del Calvera, and it sits above the Lake Calvera Preserve nature preserve.

How To Get There

The Lake Calvera trail and the remnants of Cerro de la Calvera lie a few miles east of the Village. To drive, it will only take about 10-15 minutes to get to the trailhead located on Tamarack avenue. Click here to see the trailhead on a map.

Before You Go

Take a look at the weather before you go, as this trail can get hot during the middle of summer – and when hiking to the peak (about 400 feet up), you will be exposed. The trail options here are extensive and include some elevation ups and downs – nothing world-class, but the main peak is a bit of a climb. If you stick to the Lake Loop Trail, it’s pretty flat and tennis shoes are fine. But the hike to the peak is a bit rockier, so trail shoes would be a better choice if you have them. As always in California, bring your own water supply.

Best Trails To Take

Start with the Lake Loop Trail, which is a 1.8 mile loop. If you want to make the 400 ft. climb to the peak above the 22 million year old plug volcano (only 3 exist in California), look for the upper trail on the southern loop. Take a look at Alltrails.com or click here for the best information about the Lake Calvera Trails from the city of Carlsbad. We suggest you take a screenshot of the trail system with your phone before heading out, just in case you don’t have cell phone coverage while out on the trail. T-Mobile and Verizon worked well throughout our hikes in the park.

What You’ll See

During the spring, this area is often covered in all types of California wild flowers, and it truly amazing. Nature lovers and photographers will be amazed at the diversity of plants and birds through the park – especially around the lake area.

How Much Does It Cost
