Best Carlsbad Beaches

Carlsbad includes roughly 6 miles of beaches, with many of them quite different and offering a variety of activities, terrains and access. While there are no private beaches within Carlsbad, access and parking can be a challenge – especially on the weekends during the warmer months. Many beaches change during the season – going from rocky in the winter to sandy in the summer. Surf can also vary by location and by the day. So do some research and planning before heading out these BEST Carlsbad beaches.

Criteria: Sand, topography, water quality, facilities, safety, access, scenery, wildlife, noise

Robert C. Frazee Beach

Neighborhood: Carlsbad Village

This beach is the northern edge of Carlsbad State Beach, and one of the most convenient and quality beaches to go to if you are walking in from the Village. It features an upper boardwalk and lower seawall that goes farther south.  Restrooms are on the bottom walkway and lifeguards during the season. It gets crowded during summertime.

Why We Recommend: Larger beach with sandy entrance to the water, nearby bathrooms, showers and close to the village.

Hints: Grab some food and drinks at nearby restaurants to take  to the beach. Near the bathrooms is crowded, so go farther up for more space.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Sandy year round, but beach size is smaller in winter

3145 Ocean St.

Tamarack Beach

Neighborhood: Carlsbad Village

This beach is at the southern end of the Carlsbad seawall that starts at Frazee Beach (see #1 above). It offers similar amenities, but has a pay parking lot in case you want to park close to the sand. It’s about $20 and can get very crowded on summer weekends – winter not so much.

Why We Recommend: Larger, deep sand beach with sandy entrance to the water, nearby bathrooms and good surf.

Hints: Park across the street in the neighborhoods to avoid paying for parking. No food nearby except high-end Vigiluccis. Parking Lot is open 6am – 11pm. Bathrooms not great, but they are there if you need them.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Sandy year round, but beach size not quite as wide in Winter

3999 Carlsbad Blvd.

Carlsbad City Beaches - 6 Access Locations

Neighborhood: Carlsbad Village

The beaches north of Frazee Beach are often called City beaches and there are 6 access stairs beginning at Oak Ave and ending at RDC or Rue des Chateaux (named for the exclusive neighborhood to the North). These beaches are nice, but do not have lifeguards or restrooms. Popular with local residents.

Why We Recommend: Deep sandy beaches in summer (but check the surf first). Easy walk from town. Popular at sunset.

Hints: Nearest restroom is at Magee Park.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Sandy year round, but beach size is much smaller in winter

Warm Water Jetty Beaches

Neighborhood: Carlsbad West

Warm water beach is south of the jetty where the old Power Plant was up on the hill, but name is also used for the beaches south of Tamarack and the Agua Hedionda jetty. These 2 long sandy beaches stretch all the way south to the cliffs near Terra Mar. The water isn’t warm here anymore, due to the power plant being dismantled. This beach has the most sand all year round and is a favorite for families as there are large porta-pottys and water fountains along the street-only parking.

Why We Recommend: Large sandy beach with facilities that is never really too crowded due to the limited parking. A great beach to go to in both winter (very few rocks) and summer.

Hints: Come early to get the parking spots on PCH. Careful of cyclists passing by, and bring food and drinks.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Widest, sandiest beach in Carlsbad – good all year long

3145 Ocean St. – Start at Frazee Beach

South Carlsbad State Beach Campgrounds

Neighborhood: Carlsbad West

South Carlsbad campgrounds are located above a more rustic, gorgeous beach on a cliff. To get these beaches, you have to hike in from either the north or south where there are free lots, or park 2 blocks east of the entrance on Avenida Encinas and walk in to the middle.

Why We Recommend: Natural beauty and less people make this 2 mile long beach a must see. Cliffs are beautiful in spring, and separate you from the rest of the world. Nice bathrooms.

Hints: Camp store has food and drinks – and music at night. Use the restroom before heading down – its a lot of steps back up.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Year round rocks in the south, so head to middle or north end

7201 Carlsbad Blvd. – But Park on street at 6962 Avenida Encinas

North Ponto Beach

Neighborhood: Carlsbad West

North Ponto beach is on the north end of the Campgrounds, just below the parking lot. Not as crowded as town, and convenient if you can snag a parking spot. You can walk into the campground at no cost, but they lock the gate at dusk. Here you can choose to walk north to beaches below the campground, or head north towards Terra Mar Beach on lower tides.

Why We Recommend: Cliffside beach that has a restroom, and lots of room to walk in both directions. Can be small and rocky in winter, so check the tides before you go (lower is better).

Hints: You will be competing with surfers for parking spots so expect to wait a while for one to open up when the surf is good.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Sandy with some rocks in winter, but mostly sand in summer

6325 Carlsbad Blvd.

Terra Mar Beach

Neighborhood: Carlsbad West

This is small beach is mostly for surfers and tide-pool explorers when the tide goes negative. At high tide, there is no beach. On a super low tide, you can walk north around the point or head south along the cliffs to North Ponto Beach.

Why We Recommend: At low tide, it can be fun to walk on the reef and investigate the tide pools, or walk along the scenic cliff.

Hints: Check the tide before you go and if it’s negative, you might be in for the best tide pools in Carlsbad. Swimming is better the farther south you walk if there is a lot of seaweed in the water.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Rocky and weedy year round, with some sand in summer

5400 Carlsbad Blvd.

Ponto Beach

Neighborhood: Carlsbad West

The north side of South Ponto beach is often called Ponto – the jetties in the middle of the beach are the southern border of Carlsbad. This beach is very rocky, and often sparsely populated – so its a great place to pull up a chair and read – or for small kids to explore and play among the rocks.

Why We Recommend: Quiet beach except for the rocks in the surf make this one the most relaxing beaches in Carlsbad. Watch fishermen on the jetty, or surfers out in the big waves.

Hints: There is more sand as you get near the jetties and further south. Parking is along the beach and in 3 different lots. Not great for swimming.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Rocky beach all year around – but never crowded

8655 Carlsbad Blvd.

Nearby

South Ponto State Beach

Neighborhood: Leucadia

This beach is just beyond the southern boundary with Leucadia, and offers close paid parking (for those who lug a lot of gear to the beach), and some unique attributes. It’s a rocky beach all winter with a mix of rocks and sand in the summer.

Why We Recommend: Family friendly beach with swimming, bathrooms, showers, a lookout, and a great beach to walk

Hints: This beach has rocks up high and in certain spots, and can be narrow to the south during high tides – so head north to the larger beach with more sand if the tide is higher. Hide valuables in car when parked.

  • Seasonal Rock/Sand:  Very rocky in the winter. South side of the jetty is best

9969 Carlsbad Blvd.
