Unique

Batiquitos Lagoon Trail

Looking for a nearby coastal hike that combines historical/nature information with a scenic walk along a California lagoon full of native plants and birds? The Batiquitos Lagoon trail hike is your best choice for a short to medium long hike in Carlsbad for any day or time except maybe midday, mid-summer.  A fair amount of shadetive trees line a well-maintained trail that passes through different types of forests and micro-climates along a lagoon used by early inhabitants 10,000 years ago.

How To Get There

Located less than 2 miles off the 5 Freeway at the Poinsettia exit – 4 exits south of Carlsbad Village, it takes less than 10 minutes to get here.

Trail Details

This is a 1.6 mile long (3.2 mile roundtrip) mostly flat trail that you don’t need trail shoes for, but it is all dirt. And it can get muddy in the winter time after a recent rain. Dogs are allowed on a leash. However bicycles are not allowed even thought I have seen a few over the years.

This is one of the few remaining native wetlands in California, and you will be hiking near, but not right next to the Batiquitos salt-water lagoon. The lagoon flows in from and back out through the South Ponto Beach jetties.

The trail starts off relatively treeless for the first 1/2 mile so wear a hat on a sunny day. It progressively gets into more trees and you will eventually pass by the famous Aviara golf course – which can be seen through the brush and trees at one spot along the way.

Nature Center

This is great place for everyone to learn about the lagoon and the wildlife within it – or to just get a drink of water. There are frequent expert guest speakers on the topics of nature, geology, history, birds, plants and other interesting topics. Click here to see the upcoming schedule.

Learn As You Walk

The hike features numerous signs that describe the historical areas and nature along the trail. Some have Q codes to scan and learn more. Take the self-guided tour using your phone – click here for the self-guided trail tour.

What You’ll See

While the variety of trees are the stars of this walk, there are a multitude of birds and other critters if you are quiet and keep your eyes “peeled”. Using the Merlin Bird ID Sound App, I recorded over 20 different birds on a recent walk. Many hawks and falcons are here, and a few Ospreys can be seen if you are lucky. But as you walk into the various small forests and meadows, keep your ears out to hear melodies of numerous song birds hidden in the brush.

Relaxing hike for the whole family
